Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb

Violence: The story is standard Indiana Jones fare, and starts out with a man who approaches Indy with an offer. He asks Indy to retrieve three mirror artifacts that form a key and open an ancient Chinese emperor's tomb...and so the quest begins. This is an Indiana Jones game, so expect to experience tons of action, adventure, tight situation, brawling, and gun battles. However, unlike the movies of the same name, there is no blood, gore, or language (not enough to speak of, read "Mild language").

You're equipped with your fists, the iconic whip, revolver, machete, and few more weapons later on, like a machine gun, speargun, shotgun, grenades, etc. Though there are guns in the game, and they can help you out of some tight situations, they aren't the main focus of combat. You have a very limited supply of ammo and have to be pretty smart as to when to use it. Also, other than the default machete, the melee weapons will break after repeated use, so you have to be careful in that area too. So, the most reliable method is to use your fist against enemies like mercenaries, Nazis, swordsmen, soldiers, etc. Indy has the ability to use a light attack, strong attack, grab, and block. These moves apply to the whip and melee weapons too...

You also have the ability to use objects like chairs, bottles, shovels, and so on against your enemies, which are scattered throughout the levels. As you and the enemy fight you see and hear as he starts to run out of breath, and when you finally take him down, he will flail and scream in an exaggerated fashion before falling to the ground. As I said, there is no blood or gore (other than if you throw a wine bottle which will spill red wine, and no, you can't drink it) and though it is rough and tumble, the overall feeling of the fights are cartoony, staged, and pretty tame (and very fun).

Every Indiana Jones story has to have some bizarre, supernatual and somewhat scary creatures/elements, with, of course, many perilous traps, and this one is no exception. There are giant crocodiles you have to lure away by throwing human skulls. There are man eating sharks, a giant squid, and large rotating saw blades and axes flailing and spinning in tight corridors. The supernatual elements consist of living statues, ghosts, and zombies, and though bizarre, it's all quite tame, a bit campy, and harmless.

Specific scenes of violence:

  • After Indy has successfully retrieved an artifact and is heading for the exit, some enemies show up, hold him at gunpoint and tell him to hand over the artifact. Indy then turns the tables and knocks the leader in the water, which contains a giant white crocodile. The crocodile then grabs the man and flails his body in its jaws as it drags him under (no blood/gore).
  • One of the bosses is what appears to be an iron man, but if you look at the tanks in the background where you're fighting, you see humans in water-filled vats, and they look shriveled like mummies, and appear to have been experimented on. So, he probably at one point was human. You can't defeat him with his metal armor intact, so you have to throw viles of acid on him, until his armor dissolves. After this, you take a metal pipe laced with acid and stick it through his middle (no blood/gore).

Mild suggestive themes: This wasn't mentioned in the ESRB's rating. The main villain's lackeys are female twins, who are dressed in moderately revealing attire. They wear short, strapless dresses that come up to their upper thighs, and with a low midriff that shows quite a bit of cleavage. Other than this, Indy flirts lightly with the main female character throughout the story.

Mild language: The ESRB didn't mention this, although it is extremely mild. In one area, if you have the subtitles on, you will overhear an enemy say "D**n mosquitos!" in another language, which is translated by the subtitles.

Closing comment: This is a fun action/adventure game that makes you feel like you're truly playing as Indy. It has clean graphics, an extremely fun combat system, some cleverly made levels, and for the genre it takes a good while to beat. However, there are quite a few bugs and the gameplay does take a lot of trial & error. But, overall it's a great game. Content-wise, it's very tame, with no blood, gore, or language. And the overall attitude of "violence" is fun, not brutal. So, I recommend this game for ages 13+.
